I'm beginning to like autumn...

Good morning.

It's Saturday, which is my favorite day.
I'm about to head off to the Farmer's Market on my bike.
This evening I'll be hosting a Food Appreciation potluck with fellow high school students.

Tomorrow night, I'm going with some friends to see Sufjan Stevens in concert. It's in Kansas City, and the drive will be glorious.

The leaves are starting to change here, but it's still warm.
I'm beginning to like autumn.

Hope you're doing well.

Best,
Serena

News Coverage and Other Stuffs

Exciting things --

1) On Monday I was interviewed for KUAF's Ozarks at Large, and I should be featured sometime this week. The interview went astoundingly well, and we all had a good time. I fed the reporters a browned squash and brie tower (I'm still looking for a good name.) -- it was superb. More details to come!

2) A few days ago I answered some questions for a reporter from The Food File. That's supposed to be featured on their website tomorrow.

3) Today I made my first meat dish! It was a spicy lamb steak with a refreshing, mint sauce to go with it. Too bad our blender is worthless, so really there were just some mint leaves and garlic on top. Here's where I got the recipe: http://norecipes.com

4) I now have five followers, one of which I don't know personally (hello!). To all of my sneaky, unnamed readers, I do appreciate you. It would mean so much if you let me know you exist.

5) For newcomers, this blog my venue for documenting my passions -- food and art and language and how they overlap. I also focus on my project, Green Food Solutions (check out the right hand column, then scroll down a bit), which is really some combination of those other elements.

6) I'm heading up to Minneapollis over Labor Day. I'm helping my brother move into his dorm at Carleton College, and then I'll be spending some time with family and friends that I met at August Gathering. Exciting!

7) I found a new Kickball CD in our van. Huckleberry Eater. They're really wonderful when you get to know them -- myspace.com/kickballl. I don't think they'll ever know how much I appreciate their sound.

I haven't done any homework yet, mostly because I'm too excited about this gorgeous weather and this wonderful vision I'm working towards. I'll post links to news stuffs once I learn more.

Thanks for dropping by! Let me know you were here by posting your comments below!

Rooney and the First of Foodstuffs

These past few days have been exhilarating.

On Saturday night I helped my mum make tilapia, which I'll easily admit is not my favorite fish. We were stuck, though, and we needed some creativity. So I decided to whip out some roasted red peppers and balsamic vinegar for a topping, which added a nice touch. Even so, I would've liked more flavor for such a bland dish. That recipe will be posted shortly.

On Sunday night, bored of drilling myself for my history exam the next day, I retired to the kitchen for some serious therapy. I braised portobella mushrooms and split asparagus in soy sauce and topped it with a fried egg, thus making a little nest. To go with it I made a tangy cream sauce that I'm rather proud of. In the future I'd like to poach the egg, though I saw my dad do this once, and the process looks intimidating. This recipe should also be up soon.

Last night a family friend came over to help us plan our upcoming trip to Italy, which I'm increasingly excited for. For that I made what she called insalata mescolato, which is Italian for mixed salad. It was overly simple but aesthetically pleasing, so I'll share it anyways. The recipe should be posted soon. (If I learn how to enter links I'll add those eventually, just to make it easier on you.)

After dinner last night I went to a Rooney concert on a whim, as they were playing a free concert at the University of Arkansas, and it was one of those crazy opportunities you just have to take. I haven't listened to Rooney regularly on my own, but my sister liked them when she was younger, so the music was still familiar. Regardless, I feel I can enjoy myself even more if there's no sentimental value to the music I'm listening to. For example, I went to a Jack Johnson concert last summer, and I had spent some time perfecting my lyrics beforehand so that I could adequately sing along at the show. The problem was, though, that I cared too much about singing along that I didn't actually listen. So Rooney was perfect. I danced crazily, of course, and felt so refreshed afterwards. I can understand why people find my dancing off-putting, but it's one of the few instances that I completely let go of my inhibitions in public. I just wish I had an equally crazy dance partner.

I figure that's an adequate enough first real post. I hope you enjoyed it. I'll post recipes soon!

Have a lovely evening.
