Drawing
 Fall 2011-Spring 2012

As my plane from London Heathrow to Mal Pensa took off around noon on September 5, 2011, I broke open the package of a Moleskin notebook that I'd bought that morning in the airport. While we flew over France, my stomach punished me for all the anxiety I'd put upon it for choosing to spend a year abroad alone,  and I reflected upon and recorded my goals for this year. In green Flair pen I wrote: "3. Finish my sketchbook -- sketch its blank pages away. Capture my surroundings via quiet observation --> drawings. Make time (and room!) for sketching, especially when traveling." Here's where we've made it thus far:

Concentration

Inspired by The Jungle and Joan Didion’s “At the Dam”, my concentration explores the relationship between land, sky, and industrial structures. As noted in early 20th century literature, these structures support industries that ultimately harm individuals and the earth. With time, however, the earth has molded and manipulated these structures until they become sculptures on the plains of the American Midwest. While decrepit, these structures are also beautiful.

  1. Serena, your mom just showed me your blog. The artwork is awesome. The bible says if you live to see your children's chilren that is a good life. Your talents and gifts are so expansive, what an opportuntiy to be in Italy and grow even more. Your host family is always welcome to visit us in Florida, our front door is always open. My hand is broken and has pins in it.
